Kathleen

kathleen took me down her ragged mile
past the drunken bums and trawler lines
to a changing world of her own decline
bad debts and cheap hotels
"i suppose", she said, "i'll see you once again"
so i got the bus and she her train
and all that was between us was the sound of the rain
in a deep and rolling sky
she ain't going nowhere fast
the things that last forever never last
how could you be so jealous of someone else's past
that stretches way back when
